National Day of Prayer

May 1, 2025

The National Day of Prayer (NDP) is a significant event in the United States, dedicated to uniting individuals of all faiths in prayer for the nation. As we approach the 74th annual observance on May 1, 2025, it’s essential to delve into its historical roots, understand this year’s theme, and explore the various prayer focuses that guide participants during this solemn day.

The tradition of calling for a national day of prayer dates back to the founding of the United States. In 1775, the Continental Congress designated a time for prayer in forming a new nation. During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln called for such a day in 1863.

The modern observance was established in 1952 when President Harry S. Truman signed a joint resolution of Congress into law, setting aside an annual day for Americans to pray. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan amended the law, designating the first Thursday of May each year as the National Day of Prayer.

Each year, the National Day of Prayer Task Force selects a theme to inspire and guide participants. For 2025, the theme is “Pour Out to the God of Hope and Be Filled,” drawn from Romans 15:13: “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

This theme emphasizes turning to God as the ultimate source of hope, joy, and peace, encouraging believers to seek spiritual fulfillment through prayer and faith.
